The Macedonian Young Lawyers Association (MYLA) is a professional, non-profit, and independent organization that has been promoting justice, the rule of law, and the protection of human rights in North Macedonia for more than two decades. Established in 2003 by a group of young lawyers, MYLA today stands as a leading actor in the field of public interest law, with recognized expertise in providing legal aid, strategic litigation, and public policy development. In its work, the organization is guided by the principles of dignity, professionalism, responsibility, innovation, and sustainability, combining practical legal support with research, education, and public initiatives.

HISTORY

2003

On December 19, 2003, ten young lawyers founded the Macedonian Young Lawyers Association in the office of the American Bar Association in Skopje .

2004

The first MYLA office was opened in Skopje Center (Church of Saint Clement of Ohrid) in 2004.

2005

MYLA is the first organization in Macedonia to organize training for jurists and lawyers about the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

2006

MYLA begins providing free legal aid to the most vulnerable categories and establishes an internship program within the judicial institutions of the Republic of Macedonia.

2016

In 2016, MYLA operated through six offices located in Central Skopje, Shuto Orizari, Vizbegovo, Vinojug, Tabanovce, and Gevgelija, employing a team of 39 staff members.

2018

In December 2018, MYLA marked its 15th anniversary. By that time, legal assistance had been provided to 18,399 individuals, 486 court proceedings had been initiated, 114 publications had been produced, and 352 events had been organized, among other achievements.

2020

MYLA consolidated its position as a stable and influential organization with expanded areas of work – digital rights, environmental justice, and resocialization.

2024

In 2024, MYLA entered a new development cycle with the adoption of its Strategic Plan 2024–2028, which strengthens the organization’s role as a leading actor in the protection of human rights, the rule of law, and access to justice.
